SHENZHEN BAY - HUNG SHUI KIU TECHNOPOLE
Urban Design
Competition Entry
HKIA+CRLand Northern Metropolis Competition / 2023
GFA: 120000 sqm
Team: Kelvin Ma, Steven Chung
It is our contention that an evolution rather than a revolution is required that builds on the recognisable urban forms and struc- tures of our historic cities; reimagining these human constructs to accommodate even greater scales and level of intensity. The design inspiration of new Hung Shui Kiu technopole comes from majestic natural formations abundant in Hong Kong. The head- quarter buildings in this innovation town rises harmoniously from the surrounding urban skyline without abrupt changes in scale.
At the heart of this approach is the urban network; a three-dimensional structure of public spaces and linkages which form the framework around which districts, neighbourhoods and communities can emerge. With minimum footprints, buildings are in tapered form to maximize public space and community engagement. Raised podium extends this linkage between buildings and the city at large.
The raised podium creates datums at three levels - the village, the block, and the city - making sure the towers participate in a dialogue as an ensemble on all three scales. In our proposal our facade will react to this scalar variation by designing the village elements towards a more human scale, slowly growing upwards towards the city scale, making sure the dialogue works both from the ground, as well as in the skyline.
